From time to time, major food companies recall products from the market due to some kind of problem that has been revealed publicly. Now, it Sargento Foods’ turn – the company has recently recalled a major amount of their seven cheese brands after it has been discovered that they may have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes! Luckily, there haven’t been any reports of illness or fatalities up until now.
Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause listeriosis. This infection is highly serious and responsible for more than 1600 cases every year, as well as about 260 deaths. The bacterium is especially dangerous to newborns, pregnant women, people over 65 and people that have a weak immune system. Representatives from the Sargento Foods Inc. have said that they’re monitoring the situation closely and have started an investigation into their supplier, who apparently notified Sargento of the contaminated cheese.
The company has promised reimbursements for their customers, so if you purchased on of their cheese brands in the USA, you can call 1-800-CHEESE or write an email to them. For more information, we suggest visiting Sargento Foods’ website which has the details on the affected cheese types.
